To help you detect and fix any broken links on your site you’ll need a plugin like Broken Link Checker.

Another useful plugin is ‘Pretty Links’ where you can make your affiliate links ‘no follow’ and track your clicks and so on.

A word of warning though, don’t use Pretty Links or any other link cloacker tool when you’re promoting products on Amazon.

Amazon detests link cloacking and you wouldn’t be the first marketer that got his account blocked overnight

Page builder

One of the questions that pops up regularly is “Do I really need a page builder?”. In short, yes you do but whether that page builder should be hosted on your site that’s debatable. Why?

As mentioned before, site speed does matter and most page builders have a tendency to affect your site speed in a negative way.

If you’re going to sell your own products than it’s probably the best idea to host everything on your own website and just use a page builder such as Thrive Themes or Optimize Press. With the ‘drag and drop’ functionality, building a sales page will be a breeze for you.

On the other hand, if you’re just doing affiliate marketing then the only thing you’ll need is a squeeze page and a thank you page. You can easily use the page builder from your auto-responder to create these kinds of pages.

Another option would be to go “old school” and use a free HTML-editor like Kompozer to create your pages. Once you’re satisfied with your pages you’ll need to upload them to your Public HTML file with another free tool called FileZilla.

Mailing list plugin

Of course, you’ll need a plugin or software that creates a pop up on your site so that people can join your list.

You always want to build a list of visitors/buyers so that you can keep in touch with them, build a relationship and market to them in future.

Do not limit your list building by solely relying on a pop up. You’ll want to collect leads from several strategic places on your website.

Place an opt-in box in your sidebar and underneath every blog post. You could also use a floating bar to collect leads.

With a floating bar your opt-in form will always be in front of your visitors. As the reader scrolls through your posts or pages, the bar remains visible.

Auto-responder

In order to build a list, you’ll need an auto-responder. Choose one that fits with your budget and has the features you need. You only need one… and most are a recurring monthly payment.

Be aware that some auto-responder services don’t approve of emails having affiliate links. So, check the terms and conditions before signing up.

Some of the most reliable ones are:

• GetResponse
• Aweber
• ActiveCampaign
• MailerLite

Besides these tools, most other tools are optional and only serve to take your game to a higher level. If you’re just starting off, it’s best to keep your costs as low as possible.

You only need the tools mentioned in this post if you want to build affiliate marketing niche sites.

Once you have more experience and you’re generating profits online, you can invest more into your business and make your site a well-oiled profit generating machine.

Do you know what the most important step is in starting an online marketing business? I’ll tell ya right now, it’s knowing how to pick profitable niche markets right from the get-go. Master this step and you’re halfway there on the path to success.

Most beginners fail with affiliate marketing because they’ve made the same mistake. They’re jumping head over heels into a niche where there’s no money to be made, or it’s overly competitive and they don’t stand a chance against the bigger marketers.

They didn’t drill down deep enough when they were in the process of picking a niche. As a result their websites are not ranking for anything and they don’t have the financial means to pay for advertising.

In this blog post I’m going to share 6 points that are crucial when choosing your niche. Make sure to use these points as a checklist whenever you’d like to dip your toes into a new niche.

There’s a lot to discuss… so let’s dive straight in

Keyword research & Outcome

Make sure there are people searching for your niche related keywords. It’s beyond pointless to build a website that won’t get any visitors because there’s no one searching for particular keywords in your niche.

Look at your keyword list and make an estimation of how much content you can create for the niche. You don’t want to run out of topics to blog about after just 20 posts, so make sure that your niche is big enough to create content around.

Are there enough buyers in the niche?

This one is probably the most important tip to take note of. Steer clear from niches where people mostly look for free information but aren’t willing to buy anything. You need to be in a niche where people are prepared to whip out their credit cards.

You might want to start your research on marketplaces such as Amazon and ClickBank. Both of them offer sale statistics for the products that are listed on their platform. If you see products selling well in the niche, that’s a good sign.

If you see any kind of paid advertising you might have a winner, this usually means that the targeted audience is willing to spend money.

Take note of the products being sold. These are the products that you want to promote later, or you can model them to create your own product. Make sure they have affiliate programs that you can sign up for.

What about your competition?

Don’t be afraid of competition. When a niche attracts a lot of affiliates it simply reflects that there is money to be made in the niche. However, the competition shouldn’t be overwhelming.

If all you see is big names competing with each other, you’ll need to drill down further into the niche till you find a sweet spot you can compete in.

Check the keywords you’re targeting and have a closer look at the websites that show up. Do you think that you can compete with these websites? If your answer is positive, then by all means go for it.

Is it a desperate niche?

On the other end of the spectrum, if your website is about knitting baby napkins with pink dolphin patterns, most people will just glimpse over it. It might seem interesting to certain women, but they’re not desperate enough to quickly take out their credit card.

Ideally, you want to choose a niche that’s either desperate or the people in it have problems to solve. The fisherman who wants to catch the biggest carp in the river is having a desire that he wants to see fulfilled.

It may not seem like a problem to someone who is not interested in fishing, but it’s a problem to the guy who loves to fish. He’ll most likely buy a book about preparing the best bait for big carp fishing.

Evergreen is the way to go

There are some niches that are super-hot but are just fly-by-night trends. For example Pokémon Go. This was a big hit, but nowadays nobody talks about it anymore, and the popularity has died down.

If you built a site just for it, now you’d be stuck with a web property that hardly gets any traffic. Pick a niche that is stable and evergreen. You can check Google Trends to see if your niche qualifies.

Do you have any interest in the niche?

If you’d like your content creation to be effortless then you should have an interest in your niche. While this rule is not set in stone, being passionate about your niche will be easier for you to create content if you’re doing the writing yourself.

Most marketers who venture into niches that they don’t have much interest in outsource the content creation to others and they don’t write a single word themselves.

If you do have the money to pay for a ghostwriter than you don’t need to worry if you’re passionate about the niche or not. If you’re planning to write the content yourself, it’s best that you like the niche you’re in.

You should also consider to create a customer avatar, so you know exactly what type of visitor you’re targeting. This knowledge will help you to create more targeted content for your audience and therefore they’ll become loyal followers.

Once you’re on the same level as your audience, you’ll see a massive increase in your conversions.

Take note of the above tips as they’ll help you to pick profitable niche markets from the start. Apply them every time when you feel the need to explore new markets.

Look at it this way, an authority site with a lot of great content could make you a hundred thousand dollars a month, while on the other hand 10 smaller niche sites may make around 7000 dollars per site every month.

It doesn’t really matter, as long as you pick a profitable niche and do the work that is required, you will make money from your websites.

The only major difference between an authority site and a micro niche site is their flexibility and the ability to scale.

If you go with an authority site then you’ll have the ability to cover several sub-niches within your main niche.

For example, if you have an authority site in the cooking niche, you can cover a variety of topics such as drinks & beverages, regional recipes, vegetarian recipes, special diets and so much more.

If you create a lot of valuable content and optimize your blog posts properly it will rank for a ton of different keywords. So make sure that you do all the necessary keyword research and build relevant back-links pointing back to your website

Your website will attract many visitors and if it’s well monetized you could make some serious cash. With an authority website you’ll also have a lot of room to grow in as many directions as you want.

Marketers who prefer to focus on just one or two niches will often go for an authority site.

Those who got some money to spare will be able to pay ghostwriters to create top-notch content for their websites. This will benefit them dearly as it will speed up the progress of growing their websites.

Most beginners steer clear of an authority site because they find it a challenging task to create one. They often prefer to start with smaller niche websites.

Micro-Niche Websites

If you did some research on the cooking niche and drilled deep, you may have found a niche like pressure cooking. This niche is big enough to monetize, but it’s not as broad as the cooking niche.

For some marketers, even such a niche may seem too broad and they may prefer to go into something even smaller such as ‘pressure cooking for budget conscious parents’.

They took the term “niche down” to the next level and this is a perfect example of a micro-niche site.

Every single post on their website will be about pressure cooking for budget conscious parents. The website is so well targeted at a specific audience, many of the long-term keywords, also known as ‘low hanging fruit’ will rank and the small sites will get traffic.

To really boost your website visitors you might want to consider driving traffic from other platforms such as social media, forums and YouTube.

Marketers who prefer variety and get bored easily, may choose to go with micro-niche sites. After 2 months of creating a small site with a hundred or so posts, they may suddenly decide to create a new site on a topic that is completely unrelated.

If they’re bogged down with an authority site, it can become overwhelming and they may lose interest in the site. It all depends on the marketer’s personality.

One important point I’d like to mention is that when you’re purchasing a domain name, make it generic. In this example, we could go with CookingTreasures.com or something that gives an idea of what the site is about.

By doing this, in future if you wish to turn the site into an authority site that covers other cooking related topics, the domain will not constrain you.

In other words, don’t buy a domain name that is stuffed with all the keywords from your micro-niche because it might limit your possibilities, and keep in mind that the search engines aren’t too fond of keyword stuffing as well.

As you can see there is no right or wrong answer to what would be the best website for affiliate marketing. It totally depends on your personality, your needs, your budget and even the size of your chosen niche.

I know a lot of marketers who have both types of sites and they’re very successful. You’re not limited after deciding.

They fail to keep ‘selling’ at the forefront of their minds and end up failing miserably at it. They are the proud owners of a website bulked out with content, but which are about as useful as an anorexia patient at a pie eating contest.

You don’t have to deal with technical issues or unsatisfied customers. Your main goal is to create persuasive product reviews and pre-sell these products in your review. The sales page of the vendor will take care of the selling on your behalf.

There are several platforms that allow affiliates to promote products. The most common ones are:

• Clickbank
• Amazon
• ShareASale
• Digistore24

Once you’ve created your account on these platforms, it’s just a matter of adding your affiliate links into your blog posts. Just keep in mind to only review products that are RELEVANT to your niche.

There must be congruence with your niche and the products you’re recommending. You wouldn’t want to promote a cream to cure adult acne on a crafts blog just because the cream pays out a high commission.

Ideally, you should promote a mix of both tangible and digital products. It’ll also be wise to promote products on different platforms. This will ensure that all your eggs are not in one basket.

Far too many bloggers rely solely on Amazon Associates (with its piss poor commission rates). Then they cry and weep when Amazon decides to boot them out of the platform. Sadly, this happens more often than you might think. To make it even worse, the affiliates are not even given a reason as to why they were banned from the platform!

Always remember, never bet on one horse! Diversify!

2. Sell your own digital products

This is a highly lucrative way to make money from your website. You will need to learn some basic skills such as setting up a sales page, funnel, etc. You’ll also need to create a product and have good sales copy so that your sales conversions are high.

All this may seem like a lot of work… and it is… but the rewards are great.

You could do a lot of it yourself by using page builders such as Thrive Architect, Builderall or Beaver Builder. These types of software will help you immensely because they’re relatively simple and intuitive to use.

The truth is that you don’t need to do it all. The good news is that you can easily outsource all the technical parts of the process to freelancers on sites like Freelancer or People Per Hour, and focus on the things that you are good at.

While they are creating your funnel, you can put all your time and effort in creating your product. When it’s all completed, you just put the moving parts together and you’ll have a product to sell on your website.

After all, with all the content you’re posting and the trust that you’ve built, it’ll be much easier to sell a product created by you than by someone else, because your followers like and know you.

When you’re creating and selling your own products, you’ll have a lot more flexibility and be in control of:

• Price of the product
• Recurring fee or a one-time fee
• The depth of the sales funnel (upgrades, down sells, etc.)
• What the product will be about
• Customer service
  

It’s more work, but it’s also more freedom from a business standpoint… and exponentially more profit, if you’re good at it.

3. Selling tangible products

This way to make money from your website is very similar to the previous one, but instead of selling downloadable products you’re now focusing on physical products.

You’ll need a store with a shopping cart that calculates shipping and so on. This is slightly more complicated because you’ll need to fulfill the orders.

You might want to start with selling print-on-demand products or drop-shipping because these are both relatively hands-off processes. You will need to decide if you’re going to be maintaining inventory and mailing the products yourself, or if you’re going to use third party services such as Tee Spring or Fulfillment By Amazon (FBA).

You need to do some research on this as there are many options to choose from. Pick the method that suits your business. The main thing you must absolutely avoid is making lots of sales but the post office has become your second home.

4. Email marketing

Yep, here we are, good old email marketing. It appears that no marketing article can ever be complete without paying homage to email marketing, and that’s because it remains to be the most effective way to promote your offers. Unlike social media marketing which can be blocked by your audience, most people open and read their emails. You want to show up in their inbox…to sell!

Yes! Don’t forget the selling… but always remember to deliver engaging and valuable content in your emails. You’ll have to find the right balance between promotional emails and providing value for your subscribers. But first things first, you need to build a list from your website.

The easiest way to do this will be to use a software like Popt-In to display opt in forms, pop ups, floating bars and so on. This is a fantastic software that most marketers will benefit from.

5. Sell your own services

I saved this strategy for last because it has one drawback. As long as you’re providing a service which requires your direct involvement, you’ll be trading your time for money. You might not be aware of it, but providing services actually limits your earning potential, unless you have special commission arrangements in place with the people who hire you.

Common examples of services are content writing, copy-writing, graphic design, website development, video creation and voice over tasks. Most of these tasks take hours to complete and could quickly become very tiresome. You might be able to make a good amount of money, but ultimately, it’s still a job and not passive. But it’s your decision if you want to trade time for money .

A perfect alternative could be to provide software as a service and still make a hefty chunk of change without much involvement.

Or you could become a middleman and use service arbitrage to sell services that others deliver. You’ll charge a higher rate and hire a cheaper freelancer to do the job for you. You’ll then deliver that job to the person who hired you and you’ll pocket the difference.

Of course, you’ll need to ensure that the freelancer did a good job before delivering the work, so that your reputation is intact. Arbitrage is one of the oldest strategies to create an income for yourself. It’s perfectly legal and some people are making thousands by just applying this simple strategy.

Now before we dig in deeper, there’s 2 things you’ll want to avoid if you’re brand new to online marketing.

1.Avoid the Make money online niche.

You’re readers will smell it from a mile away that you have absolutely no experience. And if you do have the ability to persuade another newbie to sign up for your email list, it’s basically “the blind leading the blind”.

My advice, stay away from the MMO niche until you know how to make money online consistently before teaching it to other people.

2.Avoid high competitive niches.

The key to make this work as a beginner is LOW competition. Go for the low hanging fruits, avoid the MMO niche, weight loss niche and fitness niche. My advice, choose something like remedies or what I like to call crazy cravings.

You may be surprised by the amount of people doing Google searches for things like “how to get rid of herpes” or “how to get a bigger butt naturally”.

But anyways, here are my 5 valid reasons why you should create niche blogs.

Reason #1

Setting up a niche blog is very cost effective. You can either set them up very cheaply (domain name + hosting) or go for one of the many free options that are available like Wix.com, Weebly.com or Google Sites.com.

My advice, if you choose to go with the free option, is to go with Google sites.com, because they don’t come with any third party advertising and Google just happen to rank their own stuff higher.

Reason #2

There’s no steep learning curve in creating niche blogs. Your first step after the initial set up is to get them configured and running. Your second step is to publish and/or update your content, which is an easy process.

Seriously, you don’t have to be a technical person at all to run a niche blog. If you can drag and drop, type in a text, upload some pictures and hit a button that says “publish”, than you’re very capable to run your own blog.

Once you get the hang of it, it’s just a matter of getting into the habit of writing blog posts and publish them on a regular basis.

Reason #3

As you put out new content regularly your blog will rank higher in the search engines. Search engines just love to see new content. If you apply some basic SEO techniques your chances of a good ranking will even increase more.

Make sure that you use your keywords in the written content, make use of headers in the correct places and don’t forget to put alt attributes on your images.

Another thing that you must do is include links to other articles on your blog. If you own several blogs, you can also place links to your other blogs and get them indexed more quickly by the search engines.
